iFeatures update – Twelve teams announced

Chris Moll, Executive Producer of iFeatures, reported that 540 submissions were received in the initial proposal stage – demonstrating an extraordinary level of interest. Feedback from the industry shows that the submissions phase was a catalyst for the creative community – inspiring new ideas and bringing film-makers together.

iFeatures is the digital feature-film making initiative developed and managed by South West Screen in association with BBC Films and Bristol City Council, and as part of the Anchor collaboration.

Anchor Local Media and Journalism Working Group

The third Anchor Working Group had it’s inaugural meeting on Tues 9th March and will meet monthly. The group includes representatives from the BBC, ITV and local industry, and is chaired by Janet Jones, Principal Lecturer in Journalism at UWE.

The initial aims of the group include liaising on training attachments and monitoring developments in local news provision.

We are really excited to announce a 3-day series of workshops in Bristol, produced by the BBC Academy in association with the Bristol-BBC Anchor Collaboration.

The wide range of sessions cover new ways of working and the new tools for multiplatform production, and will be attended by BBC execs and industry experts including:

On the first Friday every month, selected members of the Anchor alliance get together informally to share ideas and suggestions on how to build on Bristol’s unique strengths in digital media, innovation and creativity.

BBC Head of R&D visits Bristol

Matthew Postgate, Head of Research & Development in BBC’s Future Media and Technology division, visited Bristol today for a series of discussions and presentations with the University of Bristol (Research & Enterprise Development department) and UWE. He was accompanied by Samantha Chadwick, Strategic Partnerships Manager R&D.

Matthew, an alumni of the University, said ‘the Bristol-BBC Anchor initiative sets out a framework for collaboration and for aligning research objectives’.

In addition to several projects presented by the Dept of Computer Science, was Peter Barham’s (Dept of Physics) system for the automated recognition of penguins, part of the Earthwatch project in the Cape.

The Anchor team are now working with representatives of both Universities to develop a 3-day series of ‘media innovation’ workshops in late March 2010. Watch this space for further details….

Aardman join Anchor Archive working group

Tom Vincent, Head of Archive at Aardman has joined the new Anchor Working Group sharing knowledge about digital methodologies and Bristol archives.

Aardman are developing their in-house digital archive along with a leading edge integrated Production Management and Archiving process. The aim is to generate significant efficiency savings and increase the exploitation of the Aardman digital archive.

The Anchor Archive Working Group meets monthly and will work with Aardman and others to share good practice on digitisation methodologies and sources of equipment – and to develop and support projects which showcase local archive content.

Multiplatform

‘Build on local specialist factual and animation output and skills – with a view to developing innovative content for web, mobile and multi-platform’

The first Anchor Multiplatform workshop was held on 24th Nov 09, developed by South West Screen and funded by the South West RDA . It had 3 key aims:

to improve understanding of multiplatform opportunities at BBC;
to foster collaboration between traditional TV companies and digital agencies;
to generate some new and interesting ideas in the multiplatform space (especially in factual / science).

The workshop included the brainstorming of project ideas which could go into development.

The workshop was attended by Lisa Sargood, BBC Multiplatform Commissioning Executive for Science and Natural History, and Rubin Shah, BBC External Supply Relationship Manager.

Scott Jones, Creative Director at Footprint TV said ‘Thanks to you and everyone involved for a great day and a half this week. I really enjoyed both sessions – and found working with digital agencies instantly worthwhile.”

Similar events are now being planned for 2010.
